NEW LYMM BOOK  REVEALS HIDDEN “HOUSE” HISTORY.

From Monday to Friday, most weeks of the year, it is Lymm’s busiest building as well as one of its oldest and most interesting. Yet its story has remained largely untold.  Now, for the first time, that fascinating history has been explored in “House Through Time” style. The result is a brand new publication:

“Oughtrington Hall  and its People”

by Lymm Heritage Centre researcher and author, Roger Hannam.  Today of course the Hall echoes to the sound of thousands of students as it forms the original core of what is now Lymm High School.  But two hundred years ago it would have been the much more subdued sound of cooks, maids, grooms, governesses and butlers to the owners of one of Lymm’s great estates, Trafford Trafford that would have resonated around the building.

With many newly published illustrations, the book traces over two centuries of history from an early link to Peterloo through many wealthy owners and tenants to poignant stories of the building’s role in two world wars, first as a haven for refugees and later as a temporary home for  pupils of a revolutionary outdoor school.  The book goes on to describe how the building became the fourth home of Lymm Grammar School followed, finally, by its transition into the school we know today.

Whether you are a student, ex-student, parent or just curious to learn more about the story of the place where you live we think you will enjoy “Oughtrington Hall and Its People” – available only at Lymm Heritage Centre (12-4 Thursday to Sunday) or online via lymmhic.co.uk.  It makes a great Christmas stocking filler too!  (Price £6.50,  56 pages.) Planned publication date October 24th
