Things ain't what they used to be .... the good old days ... I remember when ... Those were the days.
We are all prone to nostalgia and remember the good times. Being young probably helped ! But what was everyday life really like growing up in the 50s, 60s, 70s 80s. Life before the internet, before mobile phones, in fact before telephones of any sort for many of us. It was a time when we rented our televisions and went to the shops every day because we had no fridge. It started with the birth of the NHS and ended with Thatcher's Britain. We look back at a time of enormous change everywhere through the lens and memories of just one Cheshire village - Lymm.

Lymm In Living Memory looks back on those decades.

It starts with a photograph exhibition. There are some great pictures taken by a young Alan Taylor who went on to be an award winning chief photographer for the Cheshire Guardian group. Alan had the knack of turning the seemingly mundane like a lone shopper wending her way home into something evocative and atmospheric. His pictures make up the larger part of the exhibition. But there were other photographers at work at that time too documenting change and capturing events. Alan Edwards, Bill Todd and Ken Fisher were among them and their work is represented here.

Then there are the reminiscences, over 100 of them contributed by over 70 people, mainly via the lymm memories facebook group and many of them triggered by the photographs.

In addition to that we have an interactive memory map on the large touchscreen. Touch a point on the map and go there. If it's a shop, a pub or even a signal box you can maybe touch the door and go inside. We will keep adding to the map as we receive more memories.
.
And finally on the wall we will be projecting some Lymm home movies from the time.
We will be inviting you to add your own memories with a view to producing a book of the exhibition in 2026 and there's even a photographic competition for youngsters - POSTCARD TO THE FUTURE.

The exhibition uses our new extended exhibition space for the first time
THE EXHIBITION OPENS ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST AND RUNS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
