When the Bridgewater Canal reached Lymm in 1767 it transformed life in the village. It also brought a new importance to Bridgewater St, as it soon became known.
Many businesses opened along the street including Joseph Statham, one of several wheelwrights in the village.
Almost 100 years later the railway brought another huge change. With it came an influx of affluent Manchester merchants and businessmen. Banks started to appear in the village including the Union Bank of Manchester on the corner of Bridgewater St and Eagle Brow.
The site is currently undergoing a major refurbishment that will return its appearance to something akin to the building that was demolished nearly 50 years ago.
It's a great opportunity for us to reflect on how a community's needs and preferences drive change. Come along and discover 200 years of history on the site of the old Barclays Bank and its surroundings.
